Allied and partnered nations conduct multilateral training during UNITAS LXV in Chile, Sept. 2 - 12, 2024. UNITAS, hosted by Chile this year, is the world’s longest-running annual multinational maritime exercise that focuses on enhancing interoperability among multiple nations and joint forces during littoral and amphibious operations in order to build on existing regional partnerships and create new enduring relationships that promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility. UNITAS, which is Latin for “unity,” was conceived in 1959 and has taken place annually since first conducted in 1960. Joint Task Force Matthew service members continue to respond to the devastating effects of Hurricane Matthew at Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Oct. 15, 2016. JTF Matthew, a U.S. Southern Command-directed team, is comprised of over 400 Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen, supporting the U.S. Agency for International Development’s disaster relief operations in Haiti during the critical early stages after the island country was struck by Hurricane Matthew.

U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South was activated as a unit Oct. 1, 1999. Over the last 17 years, MARFORSOUTH has commanded the Marines operating in the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility. Marines have been continuously engaged in planning, coordinating, and executing the involvement of Marine forces in foreign humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts, training partner nations to conduct counter-transnational organized crime operations, and other operations and activities in support of SOUTHCOM's theater strategic objectives.
