Science, technology, engineering and mathematics or stem is a hands-on program designed to encourage critical-thinking skills in students. At Osan Middle School, it’s Tom Carlin’s job to make stem relatable. Helping students gain an appreciation and understanding of stem led to Mr. Carlin being named the Air Force Stem teacher of the year. Students can learn a lot from their teachers. Air Force Staff Sergeant Justan Wayne introduces one who is helping mold the minds of his class.

Marines from Marine Corps Recruiting Command and Marine Corps Cyber Command interact with engineering students at the 2019 Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) conference in Phoenix, Ariz., Nov 2, 2019. SHPE is a national organization of professional engineers who serve as role models in the Hispanic community and aim to become leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Nearly 7,500 students, attended the SHPE 2019 National Convention, which provides college students and graduates an opportunity to network with the engineering community and show off their skills. Through a partnership with SHPE, the Marines are looking to unlock the potential of those who possess a fighting spirit that allows them to overcome adversity while staying abreast of ever-changing technology to win any battle that faces our nation.
