Marines and Sailors from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group run the Marine Corps Marathon (Forward) aboard the USS New York, Oct. 28, 2012. The forward-deployed service memebers took part in the marathon the only way they could aboard ship; on a series of treadmills. The New York, built with seven-and-a-half tons of World Trade Center steel, is on her maiden deployment and carries the Marines and Sailors from the 24th MEU and Iwo Jima ARG, currently deployed as a theater reserve and crisis response force throughout the U.S. Central Command in the Navy’s 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
