Two-hundred and ninety-six Marines have received the Medal of Honor and March 25, National Medal of Honor Day, is dedicated to them.

Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Richard A. Pittman was laid to rest in Lodi, Calif., Oct. 24, 2016. Master Sgt. Pittman passed away on Oct. 13, 2016. He served with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines during the Vietnam War and earned the Medal of Honor for his relentless fight against the enemy on Jul. 24, 1966 that advanced his platoon's position and saved many of his fellow Marines' lives. On October 17th, Camp Pendleton hosted a ceremony to officially designate and rename the 11 Area Post Office as the Camp Pendleton Medal of Honor Post Office.

Medal of Honor recipient, Master Sergeant Richard A. Pittman, passed away Oct. 13, 2016. He served with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines during the Vietnam War and earned the Medal of Honor for his relentless fight against the enemy on July 24, 1966 that advanced his platoon's position and saved many of his fellow Marines' lives. "Sergeant Pittman's daring initiative, bold fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty inflicted many enemy casualties, disrupted the enemy attack and saved the lives of many of his wounded comrades." — President Lyndon B. Johnson
