Love Through Actions

Jessica Niss, a mother of six, goes on a journey of healing after the loss of her first-born, Marine Cpl. Eric-John Niss Dejesus. Ms. Niss visited various Marine Corps installations in Okinawa to share her son’s story and advocate for safety in May 2023. Cpl. Eric-John Niss de Jesus, a former military police officer with Marine Corps Installations Pacific and a Mountain Lake, Minn. native, passed away while swimming at Odo Beach, Okinawa, June 5, 2021. Every year, a significant number of accidents occur, and many of them are tragically preventable with the right safety measures and awareness. In 2021, the United States recorded approximately 224,935 unintentional injury-related deaths, underscoring the importance of proactive safety and prevention efforts. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. MCIPAC F&ES Bilateral Aircraft Mishap Exercise

Firefighters with Marine Corps Installations Pacific Fire and Emergency Services extinguish fire from a simulated aircraft during the Bilateral Aircraft Mishap Exercise on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 9, 2023.The training tasked all participants with extinguishing an aircraft fire, retrieving all simulated casualties, and treating any injuries to bolster response plans for aircraft mishaps. U.S. Forces Japan and the Okinawa Defense Bureau coordinated the exercise with Provost Marshal’s Office, the Camp Hansen Camp Guard, MCIPAC, Fire and Emergency Services, surrounding area local fire departments, district police departments, and the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa. Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma continued in the recovery of an AV-8B Harrier II aircraft that crashed into a residential area of Imperial, Calif., June fourth. The Operation included the extensive use of a crane and supporting Marines to locate and remove parts of the destroyed aircraft from the impact crater.
