MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – The Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Office brought together industry representatives and Navy medical personnel during the annual Expeditionary Energy Concepts symposium hosted this year at Camp Pendleton May 3-5, 2016. During the event, industry representatives received direct feedback on developing technologies from Marines and sailors. Methane-powered generators first started at the Miramar Landfill, June 14, 2012, in order to create a sustainable, yet renewable, energy source for Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., and now installation officials and energy managers are looking forward to making the air station completely self-sufficient when it comes to its energy needs. Marines and local community leaders highlighted the anniversary of the first use of Miramar landfill's methane-powered generators at the Miramar Landfill, San Diego, June 7. The generators began producing energy for the air station June 14, 2012 by collecting methane gas and converting it into energy, while boosting eco-friendly consumption of energy and lowering the air station's dependence on San Diego's power grid. MCAS Miramar switching to renewable "green" energy helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move toward greater energy independence while simultaneously benefiting the City of San Diego by reducing our dependence on the San Diego electrical grid. This is a joint venture between MCAS Mirmar, the city of San Diego and Fortistar. MCAS Miramar will receive over half of its energy from renewable sources reaching the SecNav's goals of all bases and stations getting 50% of its power from renewable energy 8 years ahead of schedule.
