Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 and 3rd Marine Raider Battalion conducted parachute operations training from a CH-53E Super Stallion over Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 5, 2016. The operation provided training to the pilot and crew for when they are called upon to conduct personnel inserts in deployed environments, and also ensured that the special forces Marines continue to maintain their jump qualifications.

The raid utilized support from all elements of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force known as Provisional Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Hawaii. The helicopter was flown by Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 representing the aviation combat element. The M777 howitzer was hooked to the CH-53E by a Helicopter Support Team from Combat Logistics Battalion 3 representing the logistics combat element. The Marines from Battery A, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines fired the M777 howitzer. The command element provided support. The units are from III Marine Expeditionary Force participating in Rim of the Pacific 2016, a multinational military exercise, from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands. United States Airmen from 9th Airlift Squadron delivered two CH-53 helicopters aboard a C-5 aircraft on Feb. 15, 2016, to Værnes Garrison in Norway, in order to support U.S. Marines who are preparing for Exercise Cold Response 16. The Marines from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (-) Reinforced will be using the helicopters to provide air support to ground units during the exercise later this month. The exercise is an opportunity for the U.S. to work together with 13 NATO allies and partners to increase interoperability and collective readiness to respond to crises.
