William Pendleton Thompson Hill Award at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, December 8, 2017. MWSS-172 Marines competed to earn the title ‘Best Field Mess’ for the Asia-Pacific region. Established in 1985, the W.P.T Hill award was created to reward high quality food service by identifying the best mess halls and field messes throughout the Marine Corps and encouraging a commitment to excellence through competition. U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1 and Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 participate in a field meet at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, November 22, 2017, to win the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing’s annual rivalry games. Fighting and winning our nation’s battles since July 7, 1941, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the Aviation Combat Element of III Marine Expeditionary Force, provides combat ready, task organized forces capable of conducting aviation operations across all six functions of Marine Aviation in naval and expeditionary environments, and commands and controls aviation forces through the Tactical Air Command Center in order to contribute to the accomplishment of our nation's security objectives as required by standing operational plans in the Pacific Command's area of responsibility, engagement operations in support of Marine Forces Pacific, overseas contingency operations, and other operations as directed. U.S. Marines and Airmen finish a hot pit refuel of an F-35B Lightning II aircraft at Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa, Japan, June 27, 2017. The Marines are with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and the Airmen are with 18th Logistics and Readiness Squadron, 353 Special Operations Group, 18th Wing. The two-day exercise enabled the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps to improve interoperability and develop tactics, techniques and procedures involving the new aircraft for future joint FARP operations throughout the Indo-Asia Pacific Theater.
