Marine Corps Installations Pacific - Marine Corps Base Camp Butler brings honor and remembrance for the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, Operation Tomodachi. The Tohoku Great East Japan Earthquake hit off the coast of Japan March 11, 2011, triggering a tsunami that reached heights up to 130 feet and traveled six miles inland. It was the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan. Following the disaster, Japan and it's foreign nation allies began the long journey toward recovery. Marines with Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, participate in exercise "White Viper", which consists of multiple cold-weather combat contingencies in Camp Fuji, Japan and Sendai, Japan, Jan. 22-Feb. 23, 2018. The Marines in Charlie Company learned cold weather survival as well as several new combat related training missions and operations. As the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed Marine Expeditionary Unit, the 31st MEU provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations. Marines with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, conduct a live fire "stress range" in Sendai, Japan on Jan. 17, 2018. Marines with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment deploy to Ojojihara Maneuver Area in Sendai, Japan, to conduct Artillery Relocation Training Program 16-1, May 7-29, 2016. ARTP is a Japan-funded, routine training exercise that allows Marines with 3rd BN, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, to conduct live-fire training. ARTP is special because it allows Marines to conduct the training they require to maintain their skills in expeditionary readiness and it also provides a means to interact with their local Japanese neighbors.
