A teaser to the written feature of Gunnery Sgt. Todd N. Groves, from Fulton, Missouri. Groves was a pig farmer growing up and has now found a place he can call home in Okinawa, Japan. Groves, a maintenance chief with Small Craft Repair Platoon, Expeditionary Operations Training Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, has been volunteering on the farm of Bokusei Kinjo, an Okinawan farmer, for more than two years now.

Lance Cpl. Donald Litton, a motor transportation technician, shares his point-of-view on vehicle maintenance and serving as a Marine in III Marine Expeditionary Force. He is from Springfield, Mo., and is with, III MEF Headquarters Group.

Motor transportation Marines with various units within II Marine Expeditionary Force participated in the Semi Refueler Operator Course aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Dec. 2 – 23, 2014.

Using dozens of aircraft and a convoy of more than 50 vehicles, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit moved a battalion-size force from the ships of Amphibious Squadron 11 more than 300 miles inland to take part in Exercise Koolendong 13. Marines and Sailors from the ground combat element, combat logistics element and command element of the 31st MEU arrived in waves of Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (known as 7-tons); High Mobility, Multi-Wheeled Vehicles; and Light Armored Vehicles. During the two-day period it took the convoy to reach the training area, MV-22 Osprey and CH-53 Super Stallion aircraft unloaded waves of additional forces. The combined offload efforts of the ground and air combat elements brought a total of approximately 700 troops ashore for the exercise. Koolendong will feature several day and night live-fire exercises alongside the Marine Rotational Force - Darwin and the 5th Royal Australian Regiment. The 31st MEU brings what it needs to sustain itself to accomplish the mission or to pave the way for follow-on forces. The size and composition of the 31st MEU makes it well suited for amphibious operations, which includes raids, assaults, evacuations and humanitarian assistance operations. Soundbites from Cpl. Sgt. Adam Rehder, a Windyville, Mo., native and combat engineer with Combat Logistics Regiment 2, Regional Command (Southwest), describes infrastructure improvement efforts carried out by his Marines at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, Aug 2013. First Lt. Phillip M. Downey has a unique gift from Afghanistan for his soon-to-be-born son at home. He is sending his upcoming baby boy the Stars and Stripes, which flew 50 feet above the Task Force Leatherneck compound here April 28. Downey is currently serving a year deployment to Helmand province with 1st Marine Division (Forward) and said he doesn’t think he’ll be able to make it home in time to see his son born, so he dedicated a flag to him.
