Sikh Marine, Punjab immigrant posthumously awarded Bronze Star for heroism in Afghanistan
The family of Cpl. Gurpreet Singh receives the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V on Singh's behalf during an award ceremony here, May 30, 2013. Corporal Singh was a fire team leader who served with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, and was killed in action in Sangin district, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, June 22, 2011. Singh, a native of Punjab, India, who immigrated to Sacramento, Calif., led his Marines through intense fighting during the Spring Offensive and was struck on his body armor during a firefight.
