Houston Dickens discuss on how they overcome the challenges of being an aircraft rescue firefighter Aug. 16 on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. Lewis is from Southhaven, Mississippi. Dickens is from Waynesville, North Carolina. The Marines are aircraft rescue firefighters with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Marine Corps Installations Pacific. Marines with ARFF are required to deal with hazardous materials; handle aircraft ablaze and loaded with ordnance, and triage victims in the critical first moments of medical emergencies. Firefighters Brynne Burrough, Albert Balderama and John Arakaki speak about life as a firefighter at the Camp Foster Fire Station June 2 on Okinawa, Japan. Firefighters in Okinawa work hand in hand with U.S. personnel to protect both the military community and Okinawa residents from drowning, fires and other natural disasters. Burrough, from Redding, California, is the regional deputy fire chief. Balderama, from Mililani, Hawaii, is the assistant fire chief. Arakaki, from Ginowan, Okinawa, is the battalion chief. U.S. Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 (Reinforced) (VMM-262 (REIN)), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) conduct shipboard aircraft fire fighter training at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. The training was designed to prepare Marines to assist Navy personnel in combating fires on the flight deck of an amphibious vessel in an emergency situation.
