Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Conference Underway

The Annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN (ah-zi-ahn) Defence Ministers Meeting is underway in the country of Brunei. The forum facilitates cooperation between ASEAN and partner nations in the Asia Pacific Region to help deal with various military matters and humanitarian relief. U.S. troops are participating and bringing their expertise. Nick Tovo is on the ground in Brunei and has the report.

I’m standing on the Port of Muara Brunei Naval Base. There are 18 Asia Pacific Nations participating in this milestone ASEAN event. This is the first time the ASEAN conference is being held in tandem with a field training exercise encompassing exchanges in military medicine and humanitarian assistance response.

Many Asia Pacific Nations are situated on what is known as the Ring Of Fire… an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
“the reality of the pacific is there is 25 percent more chance or rather twenty five percent more likely chance that people who live in this region will be subject to a disaster. There is a large percentage of the worlds population who live here. 60 percent I think live here”- Col Pasnik
And so the goal of the ASEAN conference is to foster cooperation between Asia Pacific Nations to work together in responding to natural disasters. The ASEAN exercise will present a life threatening situation that multinational troops will have to respond to…
“in this exercise it’s a simulated typhoon. That rolls through the area and there a certain things that will happen because of that. Flooding, bridges are destroyed. Lack of water. There’s injuries and now a multinational force comes in and provides assistance in that scenario” Col Pasnik
Soon more than 1,800 multi-national troops from the 18 participating nations will take the field as a team to learn how to work together and bring aid to people during times of crises or natural disasters. Nick Tovo, American Forces Network, Muara Brunei Naval Base.
