Ismael Esconde wanted to make a difference during his six-month unit deployment program to Okinawa, Japan with Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment as the substance control officer. He heard about the Legend of 1,000 Cranes and thought it would be a good way to show respect to the hospitals and nursing homes he gifted them to. Esconde is from Los Angeles, California. Marines from Detachment 1, Communications Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 45, 4th Marine Logistics Group, of Peru, Ind., delivered a birthday cake and a signed letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps to Mary Cochrane for her 100th birthday. Cochrane served as a motor transportation operator during WorldWarII. Available in high definition.

Approximately 100 Marines with 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force fought off the winter chill as they supported the commissioning ceremony of the USS Somerset March 1, 2014. The San Antonio-class amphibious troop transport weighs approximately 24,900 tons fully loaded. The ship’s crew consists of 385 officers and enlisted sailors, who support up to 800 troops inside the ship’s hold. Thousands of people came from all over the country to witness the historical commissioning of the third and final troop transport built with metal salvaged after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and name in honor of those who died that day. Interviews in order of appearance: 1st Sgt. Leon M. Banta, an Oil City, Pa., native and the senior enlisted advisor for the Marine detachment at the USS Somerset Commissioning Ceremony Maj. Shawn D.
