Saipan and Tinian recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of their liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II. Marines from Guam and Japan joined residents to honor those who gave their lives in the battle for freedom.

A recent fire uncovered century-old fighting positions most recently used during the battle for Guam in World War II. Local Marines visited the site recently to assist the National Park Service in a site survey of the historical find, which comes just months before the 70th anniversary of Guam’s island-wide liberation celebration in July. Residents on Tinian and Saipan gathered information and submitted comments during public scoping meetings regarding proposed development of live-fire ranges and training areas on Tinian and Pagan islands in CNMI. The meetings, which concluded Friday, allowed government officials to provide information, answer questions and seek public input on the current preliminary alternatives proposed in the CNMI Joint Military Training Environmental Impact Statement and Overseas EIS.
