On June 6, 2021, we remember those who fought and died during D-Day, the initial invasion that started the Battle of Normandy and resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. The Normandy American Cemetery is the resting place for 9,387 Americans, most of whom gave their lives during the landing operations and in the establishment of the beachhead. The names of 1,557 soldiers are inscribed on tablets in the cemetery’s Garden of the Missing. The remains of approximately 14,000 others originally buried in this region were returned home at the request of their next of kin. U.S. Army Sgt. Robert L. Let’s see what happened “On This Day.” Tuesday, June 6, 1944, American troops performed a huge operation in what history knows as the Invasion of Normandy. The battle for Normandy is among one of the many fronts that took place on the beaches of Western Europe part of Operation Overlord. More than 160,000 Allied troops participated in the invasion.
