Former U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps veteran James Webb and Notre Dame professor, Michael C. Desch present a dog tag to the family of Cpl. Larry A Hughes during a ceremony in Inglis, Florida, Feb. 17, 2023. Webb, who received the Navy Cross for actions while serving as a platoon commander in Vietnam, and Michael Desch, a professor of International Relations at the University of Notre Dame and the director of the Notre Dame International Security Center, recovered Hughes' dog tag while conducting a battlefield study at the An Hoa airstrip in Vietnam. U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Ben Blaz (Ret), will have Marine Corps base in Guam named in honor of him, Nov. 15, 2018, Guam. Blaz who is the first Guam native to ever reach the rank of brigadier general and become a representative for Guam in Congress will have a Marine Corps base in Guam named after him for his honorary service. The obstacle course and pugil stick fights are part of the Career Orientation and Training of Midshipmen program for future Navy and Marine Corps officers. Benning Potoa'e, a defensive end for the Lakes High School Lancers varsity football team and 18-year-old native of DuPont, Washington was recently selected for the 2015 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and received his jersey from Seattle-area Marines at Lakes High School in Lakewood, Washington Dec. 16, 2014. Potoa'e is among approximately 100 student athletes from across the nation selected to participate in the game at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., Jan. 4, 2015. Ground troops from Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, Tonga and the United States joined forces to conduct land based and amphibious exercises on and around Hawaii's Big Island during Exercise Rim of the Pacific 2012. Approximately 2,200 service members from nine countries formed the exercise's Combined Force Land Component Command, operating under the command of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force 3.
