U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion and the Office of Naval Research participated in joint training at Marine Corps Outlying Landing Field Oak Grove, Feb. 28 - March 3, 2022. At the start of the training, the Marines created damage, such as craters and spalls, across the airfield to simulate destruction caused by unexploded ordinance (UXO). Together, the Marines and Office of Naval Research evaluated if their unmanned aircraft systems could scan the airfield and assess the damage quicker and more efficiently than ground personnel. U.S Marines with 2nd Marine Division tested remote controlled craft made through additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 26-27, 2017. The unmanned aerial system vehicle are designed to cater to individual missions based on distance, endurance, and carrying capacity needs. By creating a system that is easier to set up and more cost effective than traditional UAS devices, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory hopes to revolutionize the way troops conduct assignments. The Marine Corps and the Office of Naval Research tested out new augmented reality technology at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Dec. 13, 2016. The Augmented Immersive Team Trainer is designed to train forward observers on how to better work with artillery as a cohesive unit known as a joint terminal attack controller. The AITT enables the Marine Corps to train faster, cheaper and more efficiently. The story includes interviews with Lance Cpl. Kenneth Overstreet, a Fire Support Marine with 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division and Capt. Kevin Fitzsimmons, the Weapons Company Commander with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.
