2019 Year in Review

From hosting the Super Guppy to a visit from the 38th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina, had an eventful year. It saw the turnover of its command leaders. Its community members worked hard and played hard in a multitude of training exercises and family events. It highlighted its hardworking Marines, Sailors and civilians and showed off some of what takes place behind the scenes of accomplishing the mission. Aviation Academics – Letter “D” – “Dog”

The fourth #LetterOfTheDay in our weekly series #AviationAcademics is “D” for “Dog.” Military working dogs have been around since 1942. By 1946, more than 10,000 dogs had been trained for duties including mine detection, messenger, and scout/patrol. Today at #2ndMAW, the dogs add another level of security for our 2nd MAW Marines in II MEF and other U.S. Marine Corps units. Leave a comment below letting us know what other #AviationAcademics you’d like us to cover! -------------------------------------------- “D” is for Dog – Military working dogs are highly trained in bomb detection, drug detection, mine detection, escort and patrol. The dogs are all basically trained in a specialty before they are delivered to their unit where they train with their personal handlers. Dogs are usually matched with a handler who has a “similar” personality so it’s easier for them to bond. The closer the dog and the handler, the more cohesively they work together. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point has a number of dogs that train for various contingencies and threats to Cherry Point and #2ndMAW Marines.

Cpl. Hussein Sobh explains the role of military working dogs during training with Korean Marines at Gimpo Training Area, Republic of Korea, Feb. 24, 2016.
