Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jack Matthews spoke to Marines about Alcohol abuse at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Aug. 20, 2015. The commander of II Marine Expeditionary Force, Maj. Gen. William D. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Thomas Brown, a native of the small desert town Salome, Ariz., has always strived to push his personal limits. In 2005 Brown, a mortarman in the infantry, accepted the ultimate challenge and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, wanting to take his place amongst the Marines and make a difference. U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. James Merville, a Phoenix native, has been playing music since the first grade and always desired pursuing a career in music, which he found in the Marine Corps 12 years ago as a professional trombone player. Merville’s career has taken him across the world to play music in places such as Australia, Cambodia, and Mongolia to name a few. His wife of 11 years and their three children have been on the adventure as well, being stationed in New Orleans, San Diego, and Minnesota. Marines with Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response-Africa fought through the downwash of the MV-22 Osprey to complete their fast rope insertion training at Morón Air Base, Spain, Jan. 27, 2015. The insertion technique allows the Marines to slide down a rope into a variety of difficult landing zones and expands their operational capabilities throughout the region. Two Marines established an anchor point just beneath the Osprey, allowing the Marines above them to slide down in rapid succession and secure their landing zone.
