U.S. Marines and veterans compete in the 14th annual Reconnaissance Challenge on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, April 28, 2023. To honor their fallen comrades and support the Gold Star families through their struggle, reconnaissance Marines and veterans participated in the 25-mile obstacle course throughout Camp Pendleton to test their physical limits and enhance camaraderie. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt.Maj. Dennis M. Bradley, 3rd Marine Division sergeant major, talks about the caliber of Marines that have served in 3rd Marine Division. In observance of Vietnam Veterans Day he speaks about Gen. Lewis Walt, a former commander of 3rd Marine Division. Gen. Walt received a Silver Star while serving with the First Raider Battalion in Tulagi, was awarded two Navy Crosses during WWII, commanded III Marine Amphibious Force and served as the first four star General as Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Vietnam Marine Receives the Silver Star Medal

Maj. Edward F. Wright receives the Silver Star medal in Portland, Ore., Feb. 1, 2019. Wright speaks about actions taken on Aug. 21, 1967, which led to him being awarded the medal. Wright led a reaction force against North Vietnamese forces that had ambushed an Army convoy and pinned down his company commander’s relief force. While exposed to intense enemy fire, Wright’s tactical expertise and strategic placement of fire support enabled his force to steadily advance and rescue the besieged Soldiers and Marines.
