U.S. Marines assigned to Marine Raider Training Center, Marine Forces Special Operations Command, conduct their Rope Ceremony as part of the Marine Raider Course at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Aug. 1, 2025. The Rope Ceremony pays tribute to the Raiders of World War II, who wore ropes with a woven loop on the end and a wooden toggle on the other. The rope signifies their willingness to train and desire to earn the title of Marine Raider. It symbolizes their status as a selected Marine and growing commitment to the warrior lifestyle within the special operations community. MRC is a 9-month course that focusses on training and enhancing lethality and producing forces that are designed to be adaptable, task-organized, and capable of operating in complex and uncertain environments. Marine Forces Special Operations Command celebrated the 245th Marine Corps Birthday a little differently than in years past by running a collective 245 miles and coming together for a traditional cake-cutting ceremony, Nov. 6, 2020 at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC. COVID-19 restrictions have changed the way Marines across the globe are celebrating the Corps’ 245th birthday. The annual galas, held to commemorate the founding of Marine Corps, have been scaled back to ensure the health of the force while ensuring the most meaningful aspects of the festivities remain untouched. Lt. Gen. George W. Smith, Deputy Commandant, Plans, Policies and Operations, was the guest of honor at the event held outside of the MARSOC headquarters.

Marine Raider GySgt. Diego Pongo Laid to Rest at Arlington National Cemetery

On August 20, 2020 Marine Corps Body Bearers, Bravo Company, Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., paid final tribute to Gunnery Sgt. Diego Pongo during a full honors funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. Pongo, a Marine Raider, was killed during combat operations in Iraq, March 8, 2020. Barracks Marines had the solemn and honorable duty of conducting Pongo’s Dignified Transfer at Dover Air Force Base on March 11, 2020, and today escorted him to his final resting place.

Special Operations Capabilities Specialists assigned to 3rd Marine Raider Support Battalion, Marine Forces Special Operations Command, conduct frontal assault training on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jan 28, 2020. The frontal assault training consisted of buddy-rushing drills that advance to squad-sized maneuver-and-fire drills, where squad leaders were required to coordinate the movement of their squad, while supported by, stationary, crew-served machine guns. Upon assignment to MARSOC, these SOCS received advanced technical and tactical training to be effective and proficient components in special operations.
