Giving After Grief

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Maxine Russell has dedicated nearly 30 years to sending care packages to service members deployed around the world. What started as a gesture of support for troops turned into building a legacy for her deceased son. Since then, Maxine has sent more than 7,200 care packages, adopted military families for the holidays, and volunteers her time as a grief counselor to veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress, all in the name of her son Darren “White Rabbit” Russell. As the Columbus Day weekend begins, military members share a friendly reminder to drink responsibly as all the outgoing traffic leaves for the weekend on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, October 7, 2016. “You deserve to have four days off, but I need you to drink responsibly,” said Sgt. Maj Lee D. Bonar, the III Marine Expeditionary Force sergeant major. “I need you to make sure we take care of each other and watch each other’s backs, because we need to come back on Wednesday and be ready to get back to work again.” The Marines, Sailors and Status of Forces Agreement personnel are participating in the campaign to “protect what you’ve earned” by spreading encouraging words to military members and their families. They are reminded to be good ambassadors to our host nation and to stay safe during the four-day weekend.

More than 50 Marines with 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing cycled through weapons qualifications during an M240 Bravo machine gun, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon and M2 Browning .50 caliber machine gun range at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Aug. 29-30, 2016. The exercise allowed Marines to re-familiarize themselves with the weapons and qualify on them. The primary missions of the battalion are to provide low altitude ground-to-air weapon support and provide ground security for air bases.
