Retired 1st Lt. John J. O'Leary, a Marine veteran of World War II, celebrated his 100th birthday Dec. 23, 2016. O'Leary fought on Guam and witnessed the bombardment of Iwo Jima as a member of 3rd Joint Assault Signal Company.

Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 hosted a squadron tour for Green Knight veterans who served during 1966 and 1967. Together, they celebrated the Marine Corps’ 241st birthday in Yuma, Ariz., Nov. 19.

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Maxine Russell has dedicated nearly 30 years to sending care packages to service members deployed around the world. What started as a gesture of support for troops turned into building a legacy for her deceased son. Since then, Maxine has sent more than 7,200 care packages, adopted military families for the holidays, and volunteers her time as a grief counselor to veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress, all in the name of her son Darren “White Rabbit” Russell. Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Richard A. Pittman was laid to rest in Lodi, Calif., Oct. 24, 2016. Master Sgt. Pittman passed away on Oct. 13, 2016. He served with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines during the Vietnam War and earned the Medal of Honor for his relentless fight against the enemy on Jul. 24, 1966 that advanced his platoon's position and saved many of his fellow Marines' lives.

The members of the West Coast Drill Instructor Association gathered at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego on Sept. 16, 2016, for their annual reunion. Several events were held culminating in the final competition “The Best Damn Cadence Calling Contest in the West.”

Marines, vets, and allied service members participate in the 2016 Marine Corps Trials. The competition provides opportunities for the Marines to train as athletes, while increasing their strength so they can continue their military service or develop healthy habits for life outside the service. The Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment enables wounded, ill, or injured Marines to focus on their abilities and to find new avenues to thrive.
