U.S. Marines with Tank Platoon, Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, participate in Exercise Alligator Dagger in Djibouti, Africa, Dec. 6-22. This exercise enabled the tank platoon to conduct multiple firing ranges, practice tank formations, and perform annual maintenance. This exercise provided an opportunity for the three ships of the Makin-Island Amphibious Ready Group/11th MEU to come together and conduct amphibious training within the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. U.S. Marines and Sailors with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit participate in Exercise Alligator Dagger in Djibouti, Africa, Dec. 6-22, 2016. The unilateral exercise provided an opportunity for the Makin-Island Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th MEU to train in amphibious operations and combat sustainment training ashore in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. U.S Marines and Sailors with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group/11th Marine Expeditionary Unit conduct Exercise Tiger Strike 2016 in the Sabah Province, Malaysia, Nov. 9-13, 2016. TS16 was the third iteration of the bilateral training exercise held between Malaysian and U.S.'s armed forces, which included training in: jungle survival, Marine Corps Martial Arts, non-lethal weapons, helicopter loading and offloading, combat service support, medical exchanges, and small boat operations.

The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted amphibious sustainment training on Oahu and the island of Hawaii, Oct. 19-23, after departing Naval Base San Diego, Oct. 14, for a scheduled deployment to the U.S. 3rd, 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility. The sustainment training allowed the Navy-Marine Corps team to sharpen the skills they learned during a six-month pre-deployment cycle, and included planning and execution of ship-to-shore operations, a company-sized helo-borne raid, combat marksmanship, fire support operations, and simulated convoy operations.

Marines with Maritime Raid Force, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conduct sustainment training at Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Marine Corps Training Area Bellows at Oahu, Hawaii, October 14-19, 2016. 13th MEU Combat Camera, Camp Pendleton (October 6, 2016) - WestPac-16 deployment February 2016 to September 2016. The 13th MEU deployed to 5th and 7th fleet area of operations providing close air support to Iraqi security forces and the coalition fighting ISIL in Operation Inherent Resolve. The Fighting 13th supported the UAE-led coalition fighting Al Qaeda in Mukalla, Yemen. The Fighting 13th participated in multinational training exercises SSang Yong in South Korea and Eager Lion in Jordan. Marines with Marine Rotational Force – Darwin endure a French Armed Forces Nautical Commando Course at Quartier Gribeauval, New Caledonia, Aug. 15 to Sept. 1, 2016. The Combat Center hosted Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory for Marine Air Ground Task Force Integrated Experiment 2016, July 22 through Aug. 5, as part of Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2016. The experiment, held July 26 through Aug. 5, tested Company K, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Company Landing Team’s ability to operate in an enemy controlled area with limited resources and capabilities while utilizing future tactics, techniques and procedures. The end goal was to explore the extent to which smaller units will require various assets to remain mission effective.

PHIBRON-MEU Integration (PMINT) is the first of three pre-deployment training events for the ARG/MEU. PMINT aims to enhance coordinated operation between PHIBRON 5, the 11th MEU, and the three ships comprising the ARG — amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), amphibious transport dock USS Somerset (LPD 25), and amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD 45).

U.S. Marines with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit conduct a live-fire assault on a training objective using service rifles, 40mm training grenades and M249 Squad Automatic Weapons during Western Pacific Deployment 16-1. During KMEP 16-11 the Marines carried out a bilateral regimental-sized Marine Air Ground Task Force operation for the first time July 6, 2016 at Suseong Range, South Korea. The goal of the KMEP is to sustain the combined force and enhance the ROK-U.S. team at the tactical level to build combined warfighting capabilities. The ROK Marines were a part of 73rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The U.S. Marines are part of 2nd platoon, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, currently attached to 4th Marine Regiment, III Marine Expeditionary Force through the unit deployment program.

U.S. Marines and sailors worked with service members from 17 partner nations during Tradewinds 2016 in Kingston, Jamaica, June 20-28. Tradewinds focuses on increasing regional cooperation in complex multinational security operations and humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations. U.S. Marines demonstrated their amphibious assault abilities to distinguished visitors and guests from across NATO during Baltic Operations 16 at Ustka, Poland, June 16, 2016. The event marked the conclusion of this year's BALTOPS, which brought together approximately 6,100 troops from 17 NATO allies and partner nations to enhance and sustain relationships, counter transnational threats and build security in the Baltic Sea region.

U.S. Marines came together with various NATO allies and partner nations for a tactical exercise during Baltic Operations 16 at Utö Island, Sweden, June 10-13, 2016. The exercise required multiple nations to conduct a combined offensive attack on a notional enemy force. This year, BALTOPS brings together 17 NATO allies and partner nations and approximately 6,100 service members in order to build relationships, counter transnational threats and bolster security and stability in the Baltic Sea region.
