For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. NV17 showcases a highly-capable, forward-deployed U.S. military presence positioned with their Japanese partners to directly support the security of the Indo-Asia- Pacific region. U.S. Marines with Marine Air-Ground Task Force 8 (MAGTF-8) participate in Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 5-17 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif., from July 11 to Aug. 18, 2017. Marines with Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division conducted some unique exercises during their required annual training at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah, June 10-14, 2017. Focusing on mobility, lethality and readiness, the Marines improved and refined their tactics, techniques and procedures in multiple events to include; machine gun proficiency, grenade and rifle qualifications, night convoy operations, and artillery operations.

Marines with High Mobility Artillery Rocket System Platoon, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, support exercise Northern Edge 17 in and around training posts at Fort Greely, Alaska, from May 1-13, 2017. Northern Edge is Alaska’s largest and premier joint training exercise designed to practice operations, techniques and procedures as well as enhance interoperability among the services.
