Five U.S. Marines tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident during retrograde operations on September 23, 1972, on Grytoya Island in Norway as part of Operation Strong Express. Among the fallen was First Lieutenant Henry N. Pilger, who served as the co-pilot of the ill-fated aircraft. Years later, a local Norwegian hiker stumbled upon an unexpected discovery: Pilger's Naval Academy ring on the very island where the tragic crash had occurred. This poignant documentary delves into the remarkable journey of the ring, its eventual return to the Marine's grieving family, and the enduring memorial erected in honor of these brave Marines. U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force Europe 17.1 fight for first place in a squad competition covering 30km of mountainous terrain in Norway. During the competition, Marines were evaluated on their performance in land navigation, calls for fire, squad ambushes, reconnaissance patrols, the orders process, casualty aid, and casualty evacuation. Marines from Marine Rotational Force Europe 17.1 teamed up with 2nd Transportation Support Battalion to offload refurbished equipment and replace equipment that needed maintenance to keep Marine Corps Prepositioning Program Norway (MCPP-N) running. Marine Rotational Force Europe 17.1 held a Corporals Course on the base Vaernes Garnison, Norway. Marines from across Europe as well as soldiers from Norway's Telemark Battalion participated in the course learning drill, warfighting, administration, communication and conducting an in-depth physical training curriculum.
