Fighting and winning our nation’s battles since July 7, 1941, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the Aviation Combat Element of III Marine Expeditionary Force, provides combat ready, task organized forces capable of conducting aviation operations across all six functions of Marine Aviation in naval and expeditionary environments, and commands and controls aviation forces through the Tactical Air Command Center in order to contribute to the accomplishment of our nation's security objectives as required by standing operational plans in the Pacific Command's area of responsibility, engagement operations in support of Marine Forces Pacific, overseas contingency operations, and other operations as directed. For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. NV17 showcases a highly-capable, forward-deployed U.S. military presence positioned with their Japanese partners to directly support the security of the Indo-Asia- Pacific region. Lance Cpl. Jeanette E. Fernando and other Marines in her squadron were given the opportunity to revisit the battlegrounds at which Fernando's grandfather, a Navajo Code Talker, fought during World War II, July 26, 2017 , at Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, Japan. Fernando is an airframe mechanic assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, currently on a unit deployment program with 1st MAW based in Okinawa, Japan. Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 169 prepared their tools and flight gear for deployment with the Unit Deployment Program and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 5. HMLA-169 recently transitioned from AH-1W Super Cobra to AH-1Z Viper and will be the first fully upgraded Marine light attack helicopter squadron to support three deployments at one time.

Marine Light Helicopter Attack Squadron (HMLA) 169, Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 39, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, conducts a loading exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 3, 2017.
