The fourth #LetterOfTheDay in our weekly series #AviationAcademics is “D” for “Dog.” Military working dogs have been around since 1942. By 1946, more than 10,000 dogs had been trained for duties including mine detection, messenger, and scout/patrol. Today at #2ndMAW, the dogs add another level of security for our 2nd MAW Marines in II MEF and other U.S. Marine Corps units. The dogs are all basically trained in a specialty before they are delivered to their unit where they train with their personal handlers. Dogs are usually matched with a handler who has a “similar” personality so it’s easier for them to bond. The closer the dog and the handler, the more cohesively they work together. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point has a number of dogs that train for various contingencies and threats to Cherry Point and #2ndMAW Marines.

For more than 241 years, Marines have fought and trained side-by-side with their brothers, sisters and allies, but often missed are the military working dogs. Marines have been fighting alongside their canine counterparts since World War II. Since then, they have been working together to accomplish a variety of military tasks, including explosive ordnance detection, combat tracking and the application of controlled aggression.
