The U.S. Army uses LCUs for operations across the Pacific. An LCU is a Landing Craft Utility, it’s a platform, it’s a flat-bottom vessel that the army uses to approach beachheads and also unimproved ports to deliver cargo and goods for operations. The Army mariners aboard USAV Broad Run are based in Fort Eustis, Virginia, and are in Okinawa on a nine-month deployment. This is, this is kind of our culminating exercise, our culminating event, we’re going to be carrying cargo to multiple countries here in the pacific, supporting many exercises with host nations. Their last voyage is slated to last 40 days, which is a long time for a vessel of this type. Reporting from Okinawa, japan, I’m petty officer Richard Doolin.

The Marine Corps is modernizing how it commands and controls its enterprise network. Now a dedicated group will upgrade the Corps’ ability to prevent and counter adversarial cyber-attacks and minimize network disruptions and outages. August 30, 2020, in Quantico, Virginia, the Marine Corps stood up Network Activity - National Capital Region (NCR), the second network focused unit following the model pioneered by the 1st Network Battalion out of Camp Pendleton, California. The network activity will command and control the Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN) within the NCR. “This will realign the workforce and all of its resources; I’m talking about people and money,” said Col. Edward J. Debish, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Cyberspace Operations Group, while speaking to the civilians and Marines of Network Activity NCR during an activation ceremony. The MCEN is the Marine Corps’ communications backbone connecting computers, people, and related devices. The network provides robust, seamless, and secure end‐to‐end communications for all Marines; from the supporting establishment to forward-deployed forces. In total, the Marine Corps is establishing three network battalions and three network activities. The network battalions provide general support to the Marine Expeditionary Forces, while the network activities are assigned to a geographic region and tailored to the supported establishments. In the past, there were seven commanders in eight regions providing command and control of the MCEN. “What this does for the Marine Corps, the big bang for our buck, is it provides unity of command and unity of effort,” said Debish. “We all have one commander now. All the network battalions and activities will work for the commanding officer of the MCCOG and they all report to Maj. Gen. Mathew G. Glavy.” While speaking to the Marines, Debish added, “you are the first network activity to stand up in the Marine Corps. You guys are now plank holders, you guys are the seed that is going to grow into something that is going to allow us to have command and control over the enterprise networks. Patrick Scholes, director of Network Activity - NCR told the Marines “we have a special mission here.” He added, “what we do here supports the warfighter directly.” When the MCEN command and control modernization implementation plan is complete, it will empower commanders to respond faster than ever before.

Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command and Marine Corps Cyberspace Operations Group, in partnership with the Defense Information Systems Agency, conducted an authorized service interruption (ASI) March 3, 2020 to implement Joint Regional Security Stacks (JRSS) at Marine Corps Air Stations Beaufort and Cherry Point. This ASI, one of several deliberate interruptions to service, significantly improved MARFORCYBER's ability to secure, operate and defend the Marine Corps Enterprise Network.

Mark Munger, Southeast Region Network Coordinator for the Marine For Life Network, discusses the roles and responsibilities for the Marine Corps League and Marine For Life liaisons. The Marine For Life Network connects transitioning Marines and their family members to education resources, employment opportunities, and other veterans services that aid in their career and life goals outside of military service, and the Marine Corps League is the only Congressionally chartered United States Marine Corps-related veterans organization in the United States.

Heck of a Mess Marines with Field Mess Platoon, Combat Service Support Company, I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, competed for the Maj. Gen. William P.T. Hill Award on March 9, 2018, which will recognize the best field mess of the Marine Corps. They exhibited their food service capabilities to a panel of judges while supporting an on-going field operation. Marines with 1st Radio Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, and 9th Communication Bn., I MHG, develop an interactive cyber lab at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The lab allows Marines to attack and defend a complex computer network and play back previous network activity to train for real-world cyber attacks.

The third Professional Military Education course in an enlisted Marine’s career is Sergeant’s Course. One of the benefits from PME courses is the ability to network with other sergeants so they can build connections with other Military Occupational Specialties and have a better understanding of the whole Marine Corps.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – The Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Office brought together industry representatives and Navy medical personnel during the annual Expeditionary Energy Concepts symposium hosted this year at Camp Pendleton May 3-5, 2016. Corporal Rene Gonzalez fell in love with the beautiful game of soccer at an early age. His competitive character and vigorous work ethic naturally drew him to the sport. Those characteristics are also what inspired Gonzalez, a data network specialist stationed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, to become a Marine. In this interview the 21 year old from Joliet, Illinois, tells us how the lessons and tactics he’s learned on the pitch have led him to become a successful Marine and leader in his unit.
