Ten Vietnam Veterans received pins honoring their service during the war. The event took place at the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial display at the Hart Plaza in Detroit, Michigan, September 8, 2017. Marines Week volunteers worked with the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial crew to setup the event as part of Marine Week Detroit, which gives the Detroit community a unique opportunity to connect with Marines and veterans.

Part three of a three part series: Cpl. Lee Walls, a Port St. Lucie, Fla., native and navigator with Combat Logistics Regiment 2, Regional Command (Southwest), talks about his position as the route maker in the lead navigation vehicle for convoys through Helmand province, Afghanistan. Walls serves as the eyes, ears and protective shield for convoys of up to 40 vehicles pushing through rugged desert terrain where possible attacks and improvised explosive devices are a constant threat. Although their lifestyle conditions may not reflect the liberties a normal American can expect on a daily basis, they contribute to a unique and productive culture that has demonstrated its potency for completing missions, particularly in the shadow of their upcoming deployment to Operation Enduring Freedom. The platoon spent fourteen days in the field tasked with a series of construction projects meant to test their proficiency and to ultimately improve the training areas at Twentynine Palms, Calif., May 11 to 24.

The door disintegrated into small, wooden shards and burning embers as the explosive charge ripped a hole in the building and showered the line of combat engineers with debris. Six Marines with Bridge Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group poured through the gap as another team shattered a window at the rear of the building during the unit’s demolition and breaching exercise here, Jan. 18.

Marines conduct daily ceremonies at the travel Vietnam memorial wall located at Voinovich Park to remember the fallen.
