On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, the Marine Corps honors those who served in country, in theater, or elsewhere. All were called to serve and did so with honor, courage, and commitment. Sgt. Maj. John Canley will become the 298th Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor. As a gunnery sergeant during the Vietnam War, Canley took command of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, after his company commander was wounded during the Battle of Hue City. Over several days, he led his Marines while saving lives and eliminating enemy threats. Canley's fellow Marines described him as "fearless" during the war. He was originally awarded a Navy Cross for his actions. It is being upgraded to a Medal of Honor (U.S. Marine Corps video by Mat Gleeson and Ric Robinson)

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., hosted the Mobile Vietnam Memorial Wall for the 2017 MCAS Miramar Air Show from Sept. 22 - 24 in honor of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War. The theme for the air show is "A Salute to Vietnam Veterans" and features world-class civilian performers and displays recognizing the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and celebrates our longstanding relationship with our neighbors in the local San Diego community. Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Richard A. Pittman was laid to rest in Lodi, Calif., Oct. 24, 2016. Master Sgt. Pittman passed away on Oct. 13, 2016. He served with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines during the Vietnam War and earned the Medal of Honor for his relentless fight against the enemy on Jul. 24, 1966 that advanced his platoon's position and saved many of his fellow Marines' lives.
