“J” is for Joint Strike Fighter program– The JSF program flies the F-35B Lightning II and is the next generation striking aircraft within the Department of Defense. The F-35 was inducted into 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Feb. 24, 2014 at Eglin Air Force Base, FL. The F-35B supports the Marine Corps' tactical and operational needs for close air support in austere conditions and locations that may be inaccessible to traditional fighters. Thanks to its short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, the F-35B can operate from expeditionary airfields in remote, non-permissive environments with shorter runways, contributing to the Marine Corps' role as the nation's expeditionary force-in-readiness. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211 "Wake Island Avengers," 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, participate in Red Flag 17-3 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., July 10 to 28. Red Flag 17-3 is a realistic combat training exercise involving the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps and this iteration is the first to have both the Air Force’s F-35A Lightning II and the Marine Corps’ F-35B Lightning II, which is capable of short takeoff vertical landing (STOVL).

Marines with Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division conducted some unique exercises during their required annual training at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah, June 10-14, 2017. Focusing on mobility, lethality and readiness, the Marines improved and refined their tactics, techniques and procedures in multiple events to include; machine gun proficiency, grenade and rifle qualifications, night convoy operations, and artillery operations.

U.S. Marines with Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) and U.S. Marines with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211 conducted the first independent Distributed STOVL Operation (DSO) by flying all ordnance, personnel, and fuel in on mission aircraft at Yuma, Ariz., April 13,2017. Marines employed the manual drive assembly to load all up rounds using a short airfield for tactical support (SATS) loader. WTI is a seven-week training event hosted by MAWTS-1 cadre, which emphasizes operational integration of the six functions of Marine Corps aviation in support of a Marine Air Ground Task Force and provides standardized advanced tactical training and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine Aviation Training and Readiness and assists in developing and employing aviation weapons and tactics. Marines and F-35B Lightning IIs with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 began their flight from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, Jan. 9, 2017. The squadron officially transferred to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing as it transitioned through Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, en route to MCAS Iwakuni.
