U.S. service members with Joint Task Force - Leeward Islands wrapped up their mission after one month of providing humanitarian assistance to areas struck by hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Caribbean, Oct. 8. In that time, JTF - LI helped the U.S. Agency for International Development deliver over 75 metric tons of relief commodities to those most affected by the storms. At the request of the Department of State and USAID, JTF-LI deployed aircraft and service members to assist in delivering relief supplies and evacuating U.S. citizens stranded in the aftermath of the hurricanes. The task force is a U.S. military unit composed of Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen, and represents U.S. Southern Command’s primary response to the hurricanes that have affected the eastern Caribbean.
