Military working dog handlers from Pacific Air Forces and their counterparts from the Philippine Air Force shared best practices during a subject matter expert exchange April 3, 2019, in support of Exercise Balikatan. The exchange focused on various techniques including explosive detection, adjusting to gunfire and search and rescue. Exercise Balikatan, in its 35th iteration, is an annual U.S.-Philippine military training focused on a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counterterrorism, and other combined military operations. On Jan. 11, 1945 the first elements of Marine Aircraft Group 24 landed on the south shore of the Lingayen Gulf on the western coast of the Luzon Islands in the Philippines. They provided close air support to nearly 175,000 Army forces that trekked across the 20-mile beach head. They made a major contribution to the large scale Army drive to retake the Philippines.

U.S. and Filipino Marines conduct a regimental aerial assault into Crow Valley, Philippines, during exercise Balikatan 2015, April 19. MV-22 Tiltrotor Ospreys flew in dropping off infantry men from 4th Marine Regiment along with their Filipino counterparts into the valley to start the field training exercise Combined Vigilance. The large scale exercise in Crow Valley is a fully integrated training exercise with the Filipino and U.S. Marines working shoulder to shoulder, honing their war fighting skills and learning from each other. Exercise Balikatan is a bilateral training exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U. S. military to increase interoperability.
