Sgt. Maj. John Canley will become the 298th Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor.As a gunnery sergeant during the Vietnam War, Canley took command of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, after his company commander was wounded during the Battle of Hue City. Over several days, he led his Marines while saving lives and eliminating enemy threats. Canley's fellow Marines described him as "fearless" during the war.He was originally awarded a Navy Cross for his actions.
