Brandon Ballantyne, the communications maintenance chief for Combat Logistics Battalion 11, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), utilizes additive manufacture to assist the Marines and Sailors aboard the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS John P. Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, has proven to be a cost-effective production method that allows Marines to replace and acquire materials faster. With this process, the traditional process for acquiring gear could be expedited and globalized. Most recently, Marines printed parts for the unmanned aircraft, the RQ-21A BlackJack.

1st Marines logistics group has taken the lead in pushing innovation not only additive Manufacturing but also subtractive manufacturing. Manufacturing is not new, but merely enhancing our ability to fit into new age technology allowing the supply system to be re-invigorated, and being supported through our continual push in innovation efforts. We’ve been doing it a while, and have seen great progress. By diving deeper into 3-D polymer, metal and concrete printing, We are pushing the limits in material readiness solutions just to see how far we can really go. Additive Manufacturing is a viable source of supply. 1st Marine Logistics Group will position and structure Additive Manufacturing assets in order to improve material readiness through class 9 production. Marines with Marine Corps Logistics Command are incorporating 3D metal printers and laser scanning to produce and reverse engineer parts, significantly reducing repair times and quickly returning mission critical equipment back to the Marine Corps.
