The Substance Abuse Counseling Center (SACC) counselors are devoted to assisting active duty service members in overcoming substance abuse. Each counselor is a licensed mental health provider with a certification in substance use. The SACC is located in building 232, the Marine and Family Programs building. In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, Marines, Sailors and civilians at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point raised awareness through various major events on base, including a station 5K run where Victor Foster, an advocate for Marine & Family Programs, provided patrons with blue lapel pins for base-wide awareness of Child Abuse Awareness Month. Family Advocacy Program Mission: The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary program designed to address child abuse and domestic abuse within the Marine Corps community through prevention, advocacy, intervention, and treatment. The program is staffed with clinicians, domestic abuse victim advocates, home visitors, and prevention specialists who work as part of a coordinated response to meet the needs of service members and their families on the installation. Victim Advocacy Program (VAP) Responsibilities: The VAP serves as a permanent on-call duty through all hours of the day, providing initial response to victims of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault, on site or over the phone. They respond to calls from military and civilian entities (i.e., Provost Marshal’s Office, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and the Naval Hospital/Clinic). The VAP also informs victims of the voluntary nature of Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate services and their reporting options. The Family Advocacy Program, located in the Marine & Family Programs building, helps provide prevention, response and educational resources for base personnel. Personnel can set up unit training for their section on child abuse by calling (252) 466-3204/3264 or (252) 671-0377 to register for classes. October is recognized as the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. There are many resources and avenues for victims of domestic abuse. There are multiple non-military support options, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233), counseling at any Behavioral Health facility is also available for military members and their families. The Marine Corps Community Services Substance Abuse Counseling Center hosted a drunk driving awareness event on Marine Corps installations across Okinawa December 4-16.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jack Matthews spoke to Marines about Alcohol abuse at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Aug. 20, 2015. The commander of II Marine Expeditionary Force, Maj. Gen. William D. Beydler, is dedicating his full effort to educating leaders on the importance of engaging with their Marines and sailors, developing peer support groups within their units and encouraging personal responsibility regarding alcohol use.

On 1 October 2012, marked the begining for Domestic Abuse Awareness Month throughout the Department of Defense community at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, S.C. The event was led by Marine Corps Community Services. Purple ribbons were tied on trees and bushes around the hospitals perimeter to recognize the many who suffer in silence when it comes to domestic violence.
