Today in 1942, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point was officially commissioned in the beginning of World War II. Lt. Col. Thomas J. Cushman assumed command as the first commanding officer for the air station. “Officers were invited to attend if their work loads and other responsibilities permitted,” written by Master Sgt. Lou Nadlny on the 20 year anniversary edition of the air station’s very own newspaper, the Windsock.
During times of war, MCAS Cherry Point has been instrumental in providing air support for almost all operations conducted out of the East Coast. 77 years later, MCAS Cherry Point is still a crucial asset for air defense and as a training area for numerous military units. As the largest Marine Corps air station on the East Coast and with all the capabilities it has, the air station is ready for any new roles that may be demanded of it. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Micha Pierce)
