On Oct. 23, 1983, the world woke to the news of terrorist bombing attacks against U.S. Marines in Beirut.

The barracks bombings claimed the lives of 241 Marines, the single deadliest day for the Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

Earning the title Marine is a connection that remains for life. Marines and family members impacted by the attack visited Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on the eve of the 36th anniversary of the attacks to watch a new generation of Marines take the watch, and shared their story.

40th Anniversary of Beirut Bombing

40 years ago today, 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 Soldiers were killed in a bombing at the United States Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. The Marines were part of a multinational force of troops from the US, UK, France and Italy intent on fostering peace during the Lebanese Civil War. 58 French servicemen were also killed in the bombing. The sacrifice of our service members and the heroic efforts by Marines in the aftermath of the attack will never be forgotten. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Sgt. Aldo Sessarego)

Remembering Beirut

On October 23, 1983, at around 06:22 Beirut time, a stake-bed truck carrying explosives drove directly into the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines barracks in Beirut, Lebanon and exploded. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story building into rubble, crushing to death 241 American servicemen, majority of them being U.S. Marines. The Marines were part of a Multi-National Peacekeeping Force meant to oversee the peaceful withdrawal of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Lebanon. (U.S. Marine Corps Video by LCpl. Today, we remember the 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 Soldiers who lost their lives on this day in 1983, when a truck carrying explosives attacked the Marine compound in Beirut, Lebanon. More Marines died in that attack than in any one-day action since the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. They arrived in Beirut as part of an international peacekeeping force, not to make war. 31st Annual Beirut Memorial Ceremony

The 31st Beirut Memorial Observance Ceremony held at the Beirut Memorial in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. The special ceremony honored the fallen service members and survivors who served in Lebanon from 1958 to 1984 and in Grenada. Major General Richard L.
