MCTSSA, MCSWF, NPS Join Forces for AERO-T

The All-domain Electromagnetic Radio Operator Trainer (Aero-T) started as the subject of Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) thesis work by Marine Corps Maj. Will Oblak and Capt. Niles Moffat. This research identified a need across the service for improved Electromagnetic Spectrum Signature (EMSS) training at the tactical level. Brought to life through a collaboration between the Marine Corps Software Factory (MCSWF) and Marine Corps Tactical System Support Activity (MCTSSA), AeroT is a 3-component system that allows any Marine Corps unit to see their EMSS in real time through an Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) client. AeroT uses commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components to scan EMSS and mimic the capabilities of our near-peer adversaries and is used to facilitate this training in a small and affordable form factor that can be utilized at any level of training. In less than a year, MCSWF and MCTSSA took Oblak’s thesis research and created the hardware and software necessary to make AeroT possible.

Remembering Travis J. Manion and Brendan A. Looney

U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Travis J. Manion and U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Brendan A. Looney were roommates at the U.S. Naval Academy, where they graduated and commissioned in 2004. Both men were subsequently killed in action - Manion on April 29, 2007 in Anbar Province, Iraq, and Looney on September 21, 2010 in Ayatalah Village, Afghanistan. On Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifices made by these two men - who are buried side-by-side in Arlington National Cemetery - and the sacrifices of all those who have given the last full measure of devotion in service of our nation. Office of Naval Research Joint Training

U.S. Marines with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion and the Office of Naval Research participated in joint training at Marine Corps Outlying Landing Field Oak Grove, Feb. 28 - March 3, 2022. At the start of the training, the Marines created damage, such as craters and spalls, across the airfield to simulate destruction caused by unexploded ordinance (UXO). Together, the Marines and Office of Naval Research evaluated if their unmanned aircraft systems could scan the airfield and assess the damage quicker and more efficiently than ground personnel.
