Medal of Honor recipient Major Howard V. Lee

On 8 August, 1966, Major Howard V. Lee of 3rd Marine Division moved rapidly to reinforce a besieged platoon in south Vietnam with seven other Marines in two helicopters, landing in a "hot" zone and scaling up a hill to reach the platoon to help strengthen their men. Wounded by shrapnel, Major V. Lee led the men to continue attacking and calling artillery strikes deep into the night. The Marines fought on until the enemy withdrew. Major Howard V. Lee's heroic actions and expert leadership earned him the Medal of Honor that day. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Logan Foster)

Vietnam veteran paves the way for grandson

Thomas G. Taylor, a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War, inspired his grandson, Benjamin E. Bowdoin, to enlist into the Marines in Oxford, Alabama, Oct. 2, 2020. Taylor began his Marine Corps career as an infantryman in 1965. The next year he was accepted into Force Reconnaissance and deployed to Vietnam. In 1975, after the war, he became one of the first service members to enter what was then the newly-created occupational field of military police. Taylor retired as a master sergeant in 1986. Bowdoin, now a senior at Pleasant Valley High School, enlisted through Recruiting Substation Anniston, Recruiting Station Montgomery. He is currently in the Delayed Entry Program, preparing to begin recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, where he will train for 13 weeks to earn the title of U.S. Marine. The Place, The Legend, The Man

Bishopville, S.C., honored its hometown hero, Aug. 29, retired Major James “Jim” Capers Jr. during a “Parade of Heroes” there and with a plaque titled “The Place, The Legend, The Man” at the town’s Memorial Park. Capers is the recipient of a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with “V” for valor, and three Purple Hearts. Most notably for his time in Vietnam, he is one of the most decorated Marines in Force Reconnaissance history. He became the first African American to command a Marine Reconnaissance company and to receive a battlefield commission. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Sgt. Aaron Patterson). 76-Year-Old Marine Awarded Purple Heart

Former Marine Sergeant John "Jack" Madden received the Purple Heart Medal on August 12th, 2020 near Boston, Massachusetts. Then LCpl Madden was shot in the arm while serving as the squad leader for India Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment during the Battle of Getlin's Corner on March 30th, 1967. Former Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps General Richard Neal served with Madden in Vietnam and was instrumental in getting him the medal he deserved.

On 30 april, 1968, Capt. Jay R. Vargas went above and beyond the call of duty during battles in Vietnam, risking his own life and leading his men even after being wounded numerous times. For his valiant and intrepid actions that day, he earned our nation's highest honor, the Medal of Honor. Capt. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt.Maj. Dennis M. Bradley, 3rd Marine Division sergeant major, talks about the caliber of Marines that have served in 3rd Marine Division. In observance of Vietnam Veterans Day he speaks about Gen. Lewis Walt, a former commander of 3rd Marine Division. Gen.
