Air, ground and sea-based units from U.S. 7th Fleet, Pacific Air Forces, and III Marine Expeditionary Force conduct exercise Katana Strike on Kumejima, Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 26, 2022. Katana Strike is led by III MEF Information Group and is designed to demonstrate proficiency in coalition joint-force planning, coordination, and execution of dynamic targeting in a maritime environment that utilizes ground forces to initiate the targeting cycle. Katana Strike showcases 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, III MIG, which serves as the central hub for conducting long-range communications between joint ground, naval and aviation units over multiple waveforms. III MIG functions as the vanguard of III MEF, operating in the Indo-Pacific regions information environment, and supports Marine Air Ground Task Force operations with communications, intelligence, and supporting arms liaison capabilities. 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Commander, Task Force 76, completed Exercise Noble Fusion Feb 3-7, 2022. Noble Fusion highlights that Navy and Marine Corps forward-deployed stand-in naval expeditionary forces can rapidly aggregate Marine Expeditionary Unit/Amphibious Ready Group teams at sea, along with a carrier strike group, joint forces and allies, in order to conduct lethal sea-denial operations, seize key maritime terrain, guarantee freedom of movement, and create advantage for US, partner and allied forces.

Two Amphibious Ready Groups with embarked Marine Expeditionary Units along with a Carrier Strike Group, operated together in the Indo-Pacific during Exercise Noble Fusion 3-7 February 2022. The exercise, led by Combined Task Force 76/79, ranged from the Luzon Strait to the Miyako Strait and the East China Sea, encompassing a wide swath of the First Island Chain, including littoral areas in the vicinity of Okinawa. The exercise showcased joint and allied naval expeditionary forces’ ability to rapidly aggregate as a combat force to conduct lethal sea-denial operations, seize key maritime terrain, guarantee freedom of movement, and create all-domain advantage for US, partner and allied forces.
