CH-53K achieves Initial Operational Capability

Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 461 received their fourth CH-53K King Stallion helicopter as part of the Marine Corps' declaration of initial operational capability (IOC) for the aircraft. The declaration of IOC supports the commandant of the Marine Corps' Force Design 2030 by improving capabilities and restructuring Marine Corps aviation for the future fight. Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 461 conduct a re-designation ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, Jan. 21, 2022. The squadron received its first CH-53K King Stallion, and the ceremony signified the beginning of the Marine Corps’ modernization from the CH-53E Super Stallion to the CH-53K King Stallion in support of the expeditionary warfare vision for future-force employment. The CH-53K is an optimized vertical, heavy-lift, sea-based, long-range solution for the Marine Corps and will provide three times the lift capability of its predecessor. CH-53K hangar opens on MCAS New River

The first CH-53K King Stallion hangar opens at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, Oct. 8, 2019. The hangar's introduction to MCAS New River marks another on-time milestone for the U.S. Marine Corps' future heavy-lift helicopter program. The CH-53K is meant to replace the Marine Corp’s fleet of CH-53E heavy-lift helicopters. The King Stallion has several upgrades over the legacy aircraft including a digital glass cockpit and fly-by-wire controls. It can externally transport 27,000 lbs. over 110 nautical miles and has a max external lift capacity of 36,000 lbs., three times that of the legacy “E” aircraft. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Lockheed Martin announced the CH-53K King Stallion passed its Defense Acquisition Board assessment that approved for the aircraft to begin low-rate initial production on April 4, 2017.
