U.S. Marines and Sailors with U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South trained alongside a multinational force of 18 partner nations during exercise UNITAS 63 in and around Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 8-22, 2022. Exercises like UNITAS develop and sustain relationships that improve the capacity of our reemerging and enduring maritime partners to achieve common objectives. U.S. Marines and Sailors with 2d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, in support of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South, participated in a bilateral jungle training event in Manaus, Brazil, Sept. 19-29, 2022. Throughout the training event, U.S. Marines applied tactics and knowledge given to them by the Brazilian Marines, who regularly operate in the Amazon jungle. Bilateral training events such as jungle training develops and sustains relationships that improve the capacity of U.S. and partner nation maritime forces to achieve common desired effects. U.S. Marines along with militaries from partner nations participated in Exercise UNITAS LXIII, a multinational event, bringing together countries from all over South America, North America, Europe and Africa, in order to increase proficiency in conducting security and humanitarian missions in the U.S. Marine Corps, South's area of responsibility. Hosted this year by Brazil, UNITAS brought together multinational forces from Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Namibia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Uruguay to conduct operations in and off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The exercise trains forces to conduct joint maritime operations through the execution of anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, amphibious, and electronic warfare operations that enhance warfighting proficiency and increase interoperability among participating navy and marine forces. U.S. Marines kicked off their participation in Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force UNITAS LXIII, the world’s longest-running multinational maritime exercise. Since 1959, UNITAS has demonstrated a united stance of cultivating partnerships and ensuring security in Central and South America. Latin for unity, UNITAS continues to be the most important naval exercise in the US Southern Command's area of responsibility and trains forces to conduct joint maritime operations through the execution of anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, amphibious and electronic warfare operations that enhance warfighting proficiency and increase interoperability among participating naval and marine forces. Tradewinds 2022 is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored Caribbean-focused multi-dimensional exercise conducted in the ground, air, sea, and cyber domains, designed to provide participating nations opportunities to conduct joint, combined, and interagency training focused on increasing regional cooperation and interoperability in complex multinational security operations.
