U.S. Marines with 3d Battalion, 12th Marines are tough, disciplined and combat ready forces who live up to artillery’s name as the “King of Battle." 3/12 is the only permanently forward-deployed artillery battalion in Okinawa, ready to respond to crisis in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Caleb Johnson, executive officer and air defense control officer with Marine Air Control Squadron 2 (MACS-2) operating under tactical control of Task Force 61/2, shares his role as a weapons director working in a Tactical Air Operations Center (TOAC) and the functions MACS-2 provides to higher, joint, and NATO forces, while participating in exercise Formidable Shield 23 in Andoya, Norway on May 10, 2023. MACS-2 provides ground based, air task-oriented radar picture and command and control function in support of air to air, surface to air, and surface to surface fires. Formidable Shield is a biennial, integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) exercise involving a series of live-fire events against subsonic, supersonic, and ballistic targets, incorporating multiple Allied ships, aircraft, and ground forces working across battle spaces to deliver effects.
