Today, the Marine Corps is better prepared to serve as a naval expeditionary force-in-readiness and operate inside actively contested maritime spaces in support of joint campaigns. While our continued experimentation and learning will undoubtedly uncover additional refinements to improve our force, we are confident our collective efforts will result in a Marine Corps organized, trained, and equipped to meet the global challenges of the 21st century.

U.S. Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier jets have an extensive history, starting in January 1985 when they achieved initial operating capability with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. U.S. Marines have spent decades maintaining and flying the AV-8B Harrier, allowing the aircraft to continuously demonstrate its aptitude and embody the lethality and tenacity of the Marine Corps. As legacy aircraft age, the F-35B Lightning II jets have become increasingly more effective in maintaining air dominance by delivering integrated sustainment capabilities to remain mission ready, anytime, anywhere. U.S. Marines with 2d Reconnaissance Battalion and 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, both with 2d Marine Division, participate in Littoral Exercise I (LEX) in Key West, Florida, and Parris Island, South Carolina, Jan. 24-26, 2022. During LEX I, Marines and Sailors experimented with new concepts and forces to prepare for future scenarios in littoral environments along the East Coast. U.S. Marines with 3d Marine Division and elements throughout III Marine Expeditionary Force employ Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations across the Hawaiian Islands during Large Scale Exercise 2021, Aug. 3 to 16, 2021. LSE 2021 is a live, virtual, and constructive exercise employing integrated command and control, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and sensors across the Joint Force to expand battlefield awareness, share targeting data, and conduct long-range precision strikes in support of naval operations in a contested environment.
