Mr. Shigeaki Mori, a prominent Japanese historian and a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, observed the 80th anniversary of the B-24 Lonesome Lady crash in Ikachi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, July 28, 2025. The event served as a remembrance for Japanese and American causalities from two different events in the same region on the same day in 1945. Following Lonesome Lady’s crash, eight American prisoners of war were detained, six of whom later lost their lives in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Lance Cpl. Pfc. Wilbur C. Mattern Laid to Rest

Pfc. Wilbur C. Mattern, Company M, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, Nov. 21, 2016. The Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency recovered his remains earlier this year, bringing a total of 113 U.S. Servicemembers home in 2016, so far. Their mission is to search for missing personnel from past and recent conflicts. Mattern was recovered on the island of Betio, which was involved in the Battle of Tarawa on Nov. 20-22, 1943, during World War II. (U.S. Marine Corps Video by Sgt. Remington Hall)

Hiking for the Fallen, U.S. Marines and Philippine Soldiers Walk Shoulder to Shoulder

U.S. Marines hike shoulder to shoulder with the Philippine Army to the Capas National Shrine for the first ever Freedom March, April 11. The ten-kilometer hike brought together the two military forces to commemorate the fallen American and Filipino prisoners of war who lost their lives during the forced “Death March” out of the Bataan Peninsula during World War II.
