GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. THE PURPOSE OF THIS MARADMIN IS TO SEEK VOLUNTEER
INSTRUCTORS FOR THE SUMMER 2007 PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM PROGRAM. EACH
YEAR SINCE 1968, THE PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM SCHOLARS PROGRAM HAS
ATTRACTED THOUSANDS OF OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM AROUND
THE COUNTRY TO WASHINGTON DC. PARTICIPANTS OBSERVE THE FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT AT WORK AND ARE TAKEN BEHIND THE SCENES OF OUR NATION'S
CAPITAL FOR SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS FEATURING MEMBERS OF CONGRESS,
PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTEES, JOURNALISTS AND OTHER WASHINGTON INSIDERS.
2. VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS ARE NEEDED ANNUALLY FOR THIS PROGRAM AND
ARE RECRUITED FROM THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND IS OPEN TO ALL
SNCOS AND OFFICERS WITH AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE. VOLUNTEERS MUST
POSSESS GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF U.S. GOVERNMENT
AND POLITICS, ENJOY WORKING WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BUILD THEIR
CIVIC KNOWLEDGE, AND ACT AS ROLE MODELS TO THE STUDENTS.
3. TWO INSTRUCTORS SUPERVISE EACH CAUCUS OR WORKING GROUP OF ABOUT
40 STUDENTS, FACILITATE STUDENT DISCUSSIONS AND GUIDE THEM THROUGH
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES. VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS ALSO ACT AS ROLE MODELS,
SHARING THEIR OWN CAREER EXPERIENCES AND INSIGHTS WITH STUDENTS.
DAYS ARE LONG AND ACTIVE, BEGINNING BEFORE 0800 AND ENDING AFTER
2200. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK INCLUDE: SEMINARS WITH GOVENRNMENT,
MILITARY, CORPORATE AND MEDIA LEADERS; CAPITOL HILL APPOINTMENTS;
EMBASSY SEMINARS AND VISITS; WREATH-LAYING CEREMONIES AT ARLINGTON
NATIONAL CEMETERY; SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM TOURS, AND A CLOSING BANQUET
AND GRADUATION DANCE.
4. INSTRUCTORS VOLUNTEER FOR ONE WEEK. ALL STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEER
INSTRUCTORS MUST RESIDE AT THE GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE
CENTER IN WASHINGTON, D.C. INSTRUCTORS ARE BILLETED DOUBLE OCCUPANCY
WITH ANOTHER VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTOR AT NO EXPENSE TO THE VOLUNTEER OR
HIS OR HER COMMAND. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES MEALS, CURRICULUM MATERIALS
AND TRAVEL IN WASHINGTON FOR ALL INSTRUCTORS. VOLUNTEERS ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING AND FUNDING TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS TO AND FROM
WASHINGTON, D.C.
5. VOLUNTEERS MUST SECURE COMMAND APPROVAL, ADDRESSED TO THE
PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM PROGRAM DIRECTOR, MR. JOHN CROFT. MARINES
MUST ALSO BE IN PERMISSIVE TAD (AT NO COST TO THE GOVERNMENT) OR
ANNUAL LEAVE STATUS. THE ENDORSEMENT MUST INCLUDE A STATEMENT THAT,
IF SELECTED, THE APPLICANT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL
FUNCTIONS DURING THE TOTAL DURATION OF THE PARTICIPATION WEEK.
6. TOPICS FOR THE SUMMER PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM PROGRAM ARE:
COMMUNICATIONS AND JOURNALISM, JULY 15-21. LAW AND JUSTICE IN A
DEMOCRACY, JUNE 24-30. PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROM SCHOLARS, JUNE 17-23
AND JULY 1-7. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND PUBLIC POLICY, JULY 8-14.
NATIONAL SECURITY POLICY, JUNE 10 16. FUTURE WORLD LEADERS SUMMIT,
JULY 22-28. PLEASE REFER TO THE PC WEBSITE TO ENSURE DATES HAVE NOT
CHANGED FOLLOWING PUBLICATION OF THIS MARADMIN.
7. LAST YEAR THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS VERY
COMPETITIVE AS HUNDREDS OF APPLICATIONS WERE RECEIVED. IF SELECTED,
THE FOLLOWING MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE ADHERED TO: ATTEND A
PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTOR PROGRAM ORIENTATION
PRESENTED THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK; FULLY PARTICIPATE IN THE
WEEK-LONG PROGRAM BY ATTENDING ALL CLASSROOM FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING
SEMINARS WITH GUEST SPEAKERS AND GROUP MEETINGS; TRAVEL WITH THE
STUDENTS TO AND FROM ALL CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES; ADHERE TO THE
PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM RULES WHILE SERVING ON THE STAFF; AND RESIDE
AT THE GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE CENTER (A MARRIOTT HOTEL)
THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. SERVICE B AND SERVICE A ARE AUTHORIZED
UNIFORMS OF THE DAY. VOLUNTEERS SHOULD ALSO BRING BUSINESS
EQUIVALENT ATTIRE.
