GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  In April 2016, the Secretary of Defense issued Policy Memorandum 16-001, Department of Defense (DoD) Tobacco Policy. The policy calls for the Services to strengthen their tobacco cessation programs. In response to this policy and to support Marine readiness, the Semper Fit Health Promotion Program will offer the Operation Tobacco-Free Marine (OTFM) tobacco cessation program.
2.  In this tobacco cessation program the Semper Fit Health Promotion Program will offer free tobacco cessation classes to Marines, families, and all other authorized DoD ID cardholders. The OTFM tobacco cessation program incorporates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control and evidence-based recommendations from the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence published by the U.S. Public Health Service. The tobacco cessation classes are designed to help individuals quit tobacco and includes discussion topics on the health consequences of tobacco, barriers to quitting, familiarization with nicotine replacement therapy and other medications and creating a quit plan. The tobacco cessation classes include scenario-based interaction with a decision-making instructional approach and provide the user with many resources to quit tobacco.
4.  The OTFM tobacco cessation classes will launch in January 2017 across all Marine Corps installations. Classes are regularly scheduled and are available upon request from the Semper Fit Health Promotion Program. Classes can be delivered at the requesting unit’s location or at alternate sites as available.
